Title | Native arsenic from the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia |
Description | This sample, 8 cm across, contains gray native arsenic in a calcite host. Arsenic is one of the few elements that exists as a mineral in its native state. Native arsenic is usually fairly pure, but typically contains some antimony. On a fresh or preserved surface, arsenic has a tin-white color, but quickly tarnishes dark gray when exposed to air. Native arsenic and native antimony have nearly identical appearances and occurrences. In many instances, the only way to tell them apart is by conducting complex scientific tests. |
