Title | Native sulfur and calcite, Esmeralda Valley, Nevada |
Description | The mineral sulfur is one of the few minerals composed of only one element. (The element is also called sulfur). Typically fine-grained, when coarsely crystalline sulfur can make very beautiful specimens. Fine quality examples are much sought after. The unmistakable deep yellow color is unmatched by any other mineral (except perhaps orpiment) and the nicely shaped crystal forms of sulfur add to its attractiveness. It has a strong odor when moist because it releases hydrogen sulfide; the odor confirms mineral identification. This specimen, 9 cm across, also contains minor gray calcite. |
