TitleNative copper with calcite and epidote
DescriptionThis is a sample of copper ore rock from near Calumet, Michigan, once a major copper mining area. Native copper is an ideal copper ore and has been mined for centuries. Today, most large deposits have been mined out. In this sample, the copper is tarnished to a reddish brown. White calcite and light green epidote are also present. The host rock was basalt, but it has been highly altered. The photo is about 15 cm across.
