Title | Native copper from White Pine, Michigan |
Description | This 6 cm wide sample is basalt from the Domino Formation. It includes stringers of native copper (oxidized to green copper oxide). In the mid to late 1800's there was a thriving copper industry in Michigan's upper penninsula. Native copper was the major source of copper at that time. Michigan's copper industry died off as improved extraction methods were developed and shallower ore bodies were found elsewhere in the United States. |
