| Description | This view shows an area near the head of the Khumbu Glacier at the foot of Mt. Everest, Nepal. Close examination of an enlarged view will reveal a city of yellow tents near the center of the photograph. Those tents are the headquarters of a Japanese mountain climbing expedition. This photo was taken in the fall (October) so snow does not cover the entire glacial valley. Much of the rock rubble in the foreground, however, is underlain by glacial ice. |
