Description | Mt. Everest (29,035 ft. = 8,850 m), the highest mountain in the world, comprises many different kinds of rocks. The lower levels are mostly schists, gneisses and migmatites. These metamorphic rocks are overlain by granite, and near the summit the granite is topped by sedimentary rocks (claystone, siltstone and limestone). Sedimentary layering is visible in this photo which shows only the uppermost few thousand feet of the peak. |
