Title | Rhodochrosite with covellite and pyrite from Butte, Montana |
Description | The pinkish mineral is rhodochrosite (manganese carbonate), a member of the calcite group. Here it is found with dark, nearly black covellite (copper sulfide) and minor pyrite (iron sulfide, hard to see in this photo). Covellite has a dark indigo-blue color when fresh, but this sample is tarnished. These minerals are often found together in hydrothermal ore deposits. This sample is 9 cm across. |
