Title | Malachite and cuprite in quartz, from the Old Dominion Mine, Gila County, Arizona |
Description | The green mineral is malachite, Cu2(CO3)(OH)2. It is a secondary mineral of copper, which means it is forms by alteration of other (primary) copper minerals. Malachite is often associated with other copper minerals; in this sample, the black-brown material is cuprite, Cu2O. High-quality samples of malachite are prized as semi-precious stones, but in this sample the malachite has neither the vivid color, sparkle nor interesting texture that some specimens have. This specimen is 8 cm across. |
