Title | Sillimanite schist, Bowman, Georgia |
Description | Here we see yellowish-brown-silvery sillimanite with small flakes of black biotite. Sillimanite, Al2SiO5 (aluminum silicate), is a polymorph of kyanite and andalusite. It occurs in high grade metamorphic rocks. Sillimanite is typically fibrous (and called “fibrolite”) and often massive, as in this sample. Less commonly it occurs as blades easily seen with the naked eye. The field of view is 6 cm across. |
