Title | Gahnite (ZnAl2O4) with sphalerite (ZnS) |
Description | Gahnite is one of the rarer members of the spinel group of minerals, an important group of oxides. Gahnite (ZnAl2O4) forms in some granitic pegmatites, zinc deposits and in skarns. In this photo it appears as large dark gray crystals. It is accompanied by sphalerite (ZnS, the brownish mineral). Gahnite is an important ore of zinc, as is sphalerite. |
