Description | Iodargyrite aka iodyrite is a silver mineral, having the composition AgI. In this photo (2 cm across), the iodargyrite appears as clear crystals, but it is often colored in various shades of yellow and brown. It occurs as a secondary mineral in oxidized zones of arid silver ore deposits. This sample is from southwest Arizona which is famous for its silver mines. Iodargyrite is named after its chemical composition of iodine, the Greek iodes meaning “violet” and silver, the Latin argentum. |
