Title | Sal-ammoniac on basalt from Mt. Vesuvius, Italy |
Description | The white crystals are sal-ammoniac, an ammonium chloride mineral with compostion, NH4Cl. Sal-ammoniac is one of the more common of the ammonium-bearing minerals, all of which are quite rare. It crystallizes from vapors to form precipitates on volcanic rocks near fume releasing vents but is very soluble in water. So, crystals disappear with rain. This specimen is about 3 cm across. |
