TitleNiter from Tarapaca,Chile
DescriptionNiter, KNO3 is a rather nondescript mineral, like many nitrates and borates. Nitrates are generally uncommon because they easily dissolve in water, or even in moist air. Niter, however, is common enough to be an ore mineral. Most nitrates are found in arid, desert regions such as around the Persian Gulf or found as efflorescences on dry cave or mine walls. This sample is from Tarapaca, Chile, and is about 5 cm across.
