Title | Loellingite from Mezirice, Czechoslovakia |
Description | Loellingite, FeAs2 (iron arsenide), occurs in veins, including pegmatite, and in marble or skarn. It is uncommon, but when present is typically associated with arsenopyrite; distinguishing the two minerals can be difficult. This specimen, about 6 cm across consists of aggregated needle-like crystals and minor quartz (left side). Loellingite belongs to the Loellingite group of minerals which also includes rammelsbergite (nickel arsenide) and safflorite (cobalt iron arsenide). All members of the group are rare but are sometimes mined for the arsenic they contain. |
