Title | Cobaltite and skutterudite with nickeline |
Description | This is a sample (8.5 cm across) of silver ore from a mine near Cobalt, Ontario. The nondescript gray material is a mix of cobaltite, (Co,Fe)AsS (cobalt iron arsenic sulfide) and skutterudite, CoAs2-3 (cobalt arsenide). The copper colored metallic material is nickeline, NiAs (nickel arsenide). These minerals are often mined for the cobalt and nickel they contain. What makes this particular ore valuable, however, is that the cobaltie and skutterudite also contain silver (Ag). |
