Title | Bornite with pyrite, Butte, Montana |
Description | The gold mineral is pyrite, the brown is bornite, and the sample also contains minor (hard to see) covellite and quartz. Bornite, Cu5FeS4 (copper iron sulfide), is an important copper ore mineral. Pyrite, FeS2 (iron sulfide), is an important ore of iron. Good crystals of bornite are rare, but pyrite often forms cubes – close look at this photo reveals a hint of pyrite's cubic symmetry. This specimen, 12 cm across, comes from a copper mine at Butte, Montana. |
