TitleCinnabar from Trinity Co., California
DescriptionCinnabar (purplish mineral), a sulfide of mercury, HgS, is an important ore mineral. In Trinity County, California, it is found with ankerite, barite, mercury, pyrite and quartz. It is mined in many places, perhaps most famously in Spain and Italy. This sample is about 5 cm across. It contains well developed crystals, but they are very small. Typcially, cinnabar is so fine grained that crystals cannot be seen at all.
