Description | Chrome diopside is a variety of diopside, CaMgSi2O6 containing small amounts of chromium. It has a vivid green color, distinguishing it from other clinopyroxenes. Chrome diopside is sometimes found in pegmatites (this sample) but is more typically found as a major constituent of mafic and ultramafic rock from the lower crust or mantle. This specimen is 11 cm across. |
