DescriptionThis sample of magnesite, MgCO3, is from Negropont Island, Greece, and is about 7 cm across. Scratches on the surface are the results of students doing scratch tests to determine hardness. This is a typical sample of magnesite: massive and fine grained. Large individual crystals are rare becuase magnesite typically forms by low-grade metamorphism or alteration of magnesium-rich rocks.
