TitleSmithsonite and hydrozincite from Inyo County, California
DescriptionSmithsonite, ZnCO3 (zinc carbonate) can be just about any color and is often quite spectacular. Here it is nondescript gray. Smithsonite often grows in layers as it precipitates from water; it may have a botryoidal (grape-like) appearance. The white and yellow material in this specimen is hydrozincite, Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6 which is a hydrated equivalent of smithsonite. This specimen is 8 cm across.
