Title | Hydrozincite on smithsonite from Deming, New Mexico |
Description | The white cottony material is hydrozincite, Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6 (zinc carbonate hydroxide). It typically forms as a secondary mineral in zinc deposits, generally as masses or crusts. In some places, rare megascopic crystals are found. Hydrozincite is probably present on many specimens, but is usually unnoticed or assumed to be some other more common mineral, such as calcite or aragonite. Here we see it on smithsonite, ZnCO3 (zinc carbonate). Smithsonite can be a spectacular mineral of almost any color, but in this specimen it is dull gray. |
