TitleBarytocalcite
DescriptionBarytocalcite, BaCa(CO3)2, is a polymorph of alstonite. It resembles calcite and other carbonates, but barium gives it high specific gravity and so it “feels” heavier than calcite. Barytocalcite has been found in a number of places, perhaps most abundantly in veins at mines in Cumberland County, England. The specimen in the photo is 6.5 cm across.
LocationEngland. Near Cumberland.
