TitleAurichalcite on limonite, Durango, Mexico
DescriptionThe blue-green and the light green material is aurichalcite, (Zn,Cu)5(CO3)2(OH)6 (zinc copper carbonate hydroxide). Aurichalcite is often found partially covering red limonite, which we can see in this sample. It may be associated with other colorful minerals such as azurite, smithsonite and malachite. Aurichalcite forms in the oxidation zones of zinc-copper deposits. Crystals are acicular or fibrous and often found in tufted aggregates. Typical colors are blue to blue-green to grass green.
LocationMexico. Near Durango.
