Title | Rhodochrosite with pyrite and wad in dolomite |
Description | The pinkish rhombs on top, and the fine grained pink material below are both rhodochrosite, MnCO3 (manganese carbonate). Rhodochrosite is closely related to calcite (calcium carbonate). The white mineral is dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate), and the darker areas contain mixtures of manganese oxides (sometimes termed “wad”). Minor, hard to see fine-grained pyrite (iron sulfide) is scattered in this sample. This specimen is 9 cm across. |
