TitleChalcopyrite on dolomite, from Joplin, Missouri
DescriptionMost of this sample is pinkish “pearly” dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2 (calcium magnesium carbonate). The dolomite crystals are basically rhombohedral in shape, but most of the crystals are intergrown or have been modified in some way and so do not appear as perfect rhombs. The dark material speckled on top of the dolomite is chalcopyrite, CuFeS2 (copper iron sulfide). Chalcopyrite often has a bright metallic brassy yellow color, but tarnishes to become darker as is seen here. This specimen is 14 cm across.
