Description | The white and purple banded material is quartz, SiO2 (silicon dioxide). It is banded because it grew in layers as silica precipitated from water. The brownish crystals on the front surface are also quartz, but they precipitated at a later time. This specimen is about 10 cm across. To see other side of the sample click on the link below. |
