Title | Smithsonite and Limonite |
Description | The light green material is smithsonite, the rusty orange is limonite. Smithsonite is ZnCO3 (zinc carbonate). It is a carbonate that generally has a silky to pearly luster giving natural specimens a play of light that resembles the fine luster of melted wax glowing under a candle flame. Limonite (the orange material) is not a true mineral but a mixture of hydrated iron oxide minerals. Most of limonite is made up of goethite FeO(OH). This sample is 11 cm across. |
