| Description | This sample contains predominately green Ni-rich serpentine (sometimes referred to as genthite or garnierite), and yellow patches with hydromagnesite needles on magnesite. Hydromagnesite is a hydrated magnesium carbonate hydroxide. Serpentine is a hydrated magnesium silicate. Magnesite is magnesium carbonate. These minerals often form by alteration of mafic-ultramafic igneous rocks. This sample is 9 cm across. |
