TitleTravertine from Mineral County, Nevada, USA
DescriptionGeothermal waters are generally rich in calcium, and calcium carbonate often precipitates in layered deposits at hot springs. As warm water cools and loses gases, porous layered mounds may form. The resulting deposit is called travertine. Mineralogically, most travertine crystallizes as aragonite instead of the more common calcium carbonate mineral, calcite. This sample is 9 cm across.
