Title | Chalcanthite, CuSO4ยท5H2O, from Butte, Montana |
Description | Chalcanthite, a hydrated copper sulfate, is water soluble. It forms as a secondary mineral in copper deposits and, in arid regions such as northern Chile, chalcanthite is a major ore. In many copper mines, chalcanthite is an ongoing precipitate forming encrustations, aggregates and stalactites on the sides of the mine's shafts. The largest of the crusty nodules shown is 2 cm across. |
