Title | Granodiorite Dome, Tuolomne Meadows, Yosemite National Park, USA |
Description | The Sierra Nevada Batholith is a plutonic mass of rocks (mostly granodiorite) in eastern California and Nevada. The rocks of the batholith are Mesozoic, ranging in age from about 220 to 75 m.y. The batholith is actually composite, consisting of a large number of different plutons. For example, in Yosemite area (where this photo was taken), there are 10 different plutonic units. The polished granodiorite dome shown is one of many in the Yosemite highlands. Glacial action and exfoliation combined to produce the smooth rounded surface. Although hard to pick out, there are people standing on this rock in the upper left part of this photo. |
