Title | Speleothems in Lehman Cave, Great Basin National Park, Nevada, USA |
Description | This photo shows many varieties of stalactites (hanging down from the ceiling), stalagmites (pointing up from the floor), columns (connecting floor to ceiling), and a great deal of flowstone (polished limestone formed from calcite deposited by flowing water). These are all varieties of speleothems (which means cave formations). Speleothems grow slowly over long times, and continue to grow as long as flowing or dripping water is present. |
