Description | Vesuvianite (also once called idocrase) is a silicate with the chemical formula Ca10(Mg,Fe)2Al4(SiO4)5(Si2O7)2(OH)4. It was found originally on the volcano, Mt Vesuvius. Vesuvianite forms by contact metamorphism of impure limestones, and is often found with other exotic minerals. Typical vesuvianite is brown, but green varieties such as this are not uncommon. This sample is approximately 6 cm across. |
