TitlePeridotite, Marquette, Michigan
DescriptionWard’s Scientific calls this rock a peridotite, but it is highly altered and is mostly composed of serpentine and calcite now. The texture suggests that it was once a pyroxenite, although the exact kind of pyroxene cannot be determined. Peridotite is a general term used to describe coarse grained plutonic rocks dominated by olivine, but no hint of olivine can be seen in this sample, except that serpentine is one of the typical alteration products of olivine. 8.5 cm across.
