TitleCamptonite, Hoover Dam, Arizona, USA
DescriptionCamptonites are rare but are similar in major element composition to diorite. They are a type of lamprophyre (a term used to refer to dark-colored fine-grained porphyritic intrusive rocks containing euhedral mafic phenocrysts), and typically contain plagioclase and hornblende. In this sample, the phenocrysts are altered hornblende and plagioclase. The fine grained groundmass contains plagioclase, biotite and other material that cannot be identified.
