Title | Greenstone, Ely, Minnesota |
Description | Greenstone is a generic name used for fine grained greenish rocks of this sort. They are generally derived by metamorphism of basaltic rocks but some form by metamoprhism of sediments derived from basaltic parents. Due to fine grain size, no minerals can be identified in this greenstone, either in hand sample or in thin section. Greenstones are found in many Precambrian terranes, including the area near Ely, Minnesota, where this specimen comes from. This sample is 8 cm across. |
