DescriptionThis sample of the Precambrian Vishnu Schist is quite fine grained. Mineral identification is difficult in hand specimen, but in thin section biotite, muscovite, quartz and plagioclase are easily seen. The Vishnu Schist is one of the oldest rock units in the Grand Canyon, and in North America. This schist averages about 1,700 to 2,000 million years old. This specimen is 9.5 cm across.
