Title | Phyllite, Mariposa County, California |
Description | This is a very fine grained metamorphic rock. It is termed a phyllite because it is foliated and has a shiny/silky sheen to its surface. Even in thin section, the only major mineral that can be identified is quartz, but the shiny appearance suggests the presence of fine grained micas. This sample is 9.5 cm across. |
