Title | Franklinite with magnetite from Franklin, New Jersey, USA |
Description | Franklinite and magnetite are both members of the spinel group. Magnetite is iron oxide, and franklinite is primarily a zinc-iron oxide. Magnetite is common and widespread, but franklinite is a rare mineral found only at Franklin, New Jersey. The mines at Franklin once produced significant amounts of zinc, iron and manganese ore. In this ore specimen, the franklinite and magnetite are hard to distinguish. Both are black, but the franklinite has a brigther, more metallic, luster. |
