Title | Stilpnomenlane schist, Laytonville Quarry, Mendocino County, California |
Description | This dark bronze-brown schist is from a quarry in the Franciscan Complex of California. Stilpnomelane is a relatively rare mineral, and some of the best samples come from the Franciscan, a subduction-zone-related complex that contains rocks and minerals formed by high pressure metamorphism. Besides the dominant brown stilpnomelane, this rock also contains quartz and garnet, although they are difficult to pick out. This sample is 8.5 cm across. |
