Title | Latite porphyry from the Bearpaw Mountains, Montana, USA |
Description | Latites are intrusive igneous rocks containing nearly equal amounts of plagioclase and K-feldspar (generally sanidine). They are typically porphyritic, meaning they contain large crystals (phenocrysts) in a groundmass of finer material. This Tertiary aged latite porphyry contains phenocrysts of white plagioclase (oligoclase), biotite, and pyroxene (pale green augite). Parts of the sample have been altered to chlorite and serpentine. This sample is 9 cm in longest dimension. |
