DescriptionThe Valmonte Diatomite, a member of the Monterey Shale, is a soft, white chalky rock composed primarily of opal-like material that was once the remains of dead diatoms (microscopic marine or freshwater plants). A few quartz grains are also present. The specimen is 9.5 cm across, and is from the Valmonte Diatomite member of Monterey Shale.
