TitleChert from near Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri
DescriptionChert is a name used for a mineral-like mix of fibrous chalcedony with lesser amounts of quartz and opal. It is also the name used to describe a rock made of those materials. This specimen is dense with a light gray color, but chert comes in many different colors. When it has a dark color, it is commonly called flint. Most samples (including this sample) of chert exhibit conchoidal or splintery fracture. This sample is about 9 cm across.
