DescriptionNear Gunnison, Colorado, the Gunnison River has cut deeply into ancient rocks. The walls of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison are made mostly of the Precambrian Black Canyon Gneiss. As can be seen in this picture, the gneiss is cut in many places by pink pegmatite dikes that vary from a few cm to many 10's of meters thick.
