TitleLepidocrocite from Scranton Mine in Hibbing, Minnesota
DescriptionThe dark brown material is lepidocrocite, Fe(OH). It is often found with goethite, also FeO(OH) in iron ore deposits. The hydrous iron oxide -FeO(OH) forms when a material rusts under water. The color of Lepidocrocite can be yellow, brown, brownish red, red to black. Sometimes the crystals may be tarnished with iridescence colors and look much like hematite. Its name comes from the Greek lipis meaning “scale” and krokis meaning “fibre”.
