Title | Limonite from gossan |
Description | This 8 cm wide sample of limonite is from an unknown location. Limonite is not a true mineral, but is a mix of hydrated iron oxides, predominately goethite, FeO(OH). It forms as a “rusty” oxidation product of iron-beraing minerals. This sample is labeled as a gossan, which is a general term for an exposed, oxidized portion of a mineral vein, especially a rust-colored outcrop of iron ore. |
