TitleSapphire (corundum)
DescriptionSapphire is a name used for all non-red varieties of gemmy corundum, Al2O3 (aluminum oxide). The red variety of corundum is ruby. Most people think sapphires are blue, but other colors are possible. Yellow is very common. In some “star” sapphires, oriented rutile inclusions cause a six-pointed-star sparkly effect (called asterism). These crystals are small, about 1 cm in longest dimension.
