DescriptionThis sample shows a conglomerate with pebbles composed of hematite, Fe2O3 (iron oxide), from the Cretaceous of central Minnesota. Hematite is an important ore of iron and it's blood red color (in the powdered form) lends itself well in use as a pigment. This specimen is 11 cm across.
