Description | Hematite (the minor red-orange material in this sample) is iron oxide (Fe2O3) and is often found forming on rusty surface of samples of magnetite (the darker colored part of this sample). Magnetite, Fe3O4, is another kind of iron oxide. Hematite and magnetite are both important iron ores. This specimen from Minnesota is about 15 cm across. |
