Description | The dark colored mineral is bornite. The lighter material is mostly quartz with some sericite (white mica) mixed in. Bornite is typically dark brown or black, but may tarnish to be various shades of irredescent blue. A hint of blue can be seen in this specimen. When tarnishing produces bright colors, bornite is sometimes referred to as “peacock ore.” Bornite, a copper iron sulfide, is sometimes a major coppper ore mineral. This specimen is 7 cm across. |
